Nettie Mathieson fetches water from the spring with her mother, keeps her tiny garret neat and goes faithfully to Sunday school, though her father, a carpenter, spends too much at the tavern. Over a hard winter of a brown cloak, a new blanket, a house-raising and a promised trip to church, the child’s patient goodness begins to reach him.
