Tabitha Catt, a black-eyed country girl who recites “Barbara Frietchie” to a pail of blackberries, hates both her names and sets out to choose a better one. Her stubborn pride brings trouble at home and with a new boy in town, and a fire in the night and a decision by Aunt Maria finally send her off to Ivy Hall and a new room-mate.
