Kathleen Wilcox, perched on a boot locker in new patent-leather shoes, declares that Kingfield High School is not nearly go-ahead enough, and Lesbia Ferrars, the oldest pupil, takes up the challenge. Their year brings upheavals, schemes to raise the school’s standing, juniors who need managing, a school play and Lesbia’s own decision about her future.
