Rose Campbell, thirteen, orphaned and sickly, sits weeping in the best parlour of the Aunt Hill when her guardian Uncle Alec arrives from the sea. He throws out the medicines and corsets, sends her outdoors with her seven boisterous boy cousins, and sets about raising her his own way, with the household maid Phebe as her friend.
