Skating on a lake frozen unusually early in November, Billie Bradley and her chums Violet and Laura discover how thin the ice really is. Back at school, a near-frozen rescue brings Polly Haddon into their lives, winter sports and rivalries follow, and a dare to climb a forbidden tower leads to a mystery.
