Hawthorne’s retellings from the Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales make up much of this selection: the three golden apples, the pomegranate seeds, the Chimæra, King Midas and the golden touch, Perseus and the Gorgon, and Cadmus sowing the dragon’s teeth. Mabie adds Norse stories and passages from Kingsley and Church, prefaced by an introduction on how myths grew out of the questions of early peoples.
