Ben Ralston, sitting with his cousin Beth on Russian Hill, complains that he was born forty years too late for the Gold Rush. Then he discovers that the smokeless chimney of an old smelting works below may hold a fortune. With a canny old partner, Mundon, he raises funds, buys mules, builds an arastra and starts washing gold from the soot.
