An old miser named Clutterbuck sets his relations a race: the one who finds his treasure will have it. The young narrator enters, and with his friends faces treachery from the ruthless rival Strong, stolen letters, a night with a lion, a rogue elephant and a spell of being mourned for dead before the trail leads to a far-off coalfield.
A brisk 1910 boys’ adventure; a chapter title and some attitudes carry the casual racism of its day. Download the free EPUB.
