In 1718 a tall lad of Charles Town, South Carolina, who hates grammar and loves adventure, sails on a merchant trader and is taken hostage by Blackbeard, ally of the courteous pirate Stede Bonnet. Captive seamen, a raft voyage, swamps and winding creeks lead to a chase after the pirate in his crimson turban.
