At Woodlawn, on the shores of Lake Shawsheen, Mr. Curtis is laying out terraces and avenues around his new house, and young Bertie spends his days with the gardeners and workmen. Through a sick workman, a merry Irish gardener, a sorrowing father and an Irish boy named Pat, he learns the way to be happy.
