Fourteen-year-old Dave Mitchell lives in a Manhattan apartment with a quiet mother and a lawyer father who never stops talking, so he adopts a stray tomcat partly to annoy him. Cat leads Dave to new friendships, with an eccentric woman who keeps cats, a troubled young man and a girl he meets at Coney Island, and to a better understanding of his father.
