Six tales set among the islands of the Pacific, framed by sketches of the ocean itself. A missionary and a stranded prostitute are trapped together in Pago Pago during the rains; a clerk who marries a Samoan girl is slowly undone; an assistant on a remote island comes to hate his overbearing chief. Heat, isolation and the collapse of European respectability run through every story.
