Travelling from the Via Mala to the Splügen and down to Bellagio on Lake Como, the narrator falls in with an English couple, the Greenes. Mr. Greene distrusts foreign banks and carries his money in a box, and when it disappears the whole hotel is thrown into uproar while his wife broadcasts her grievance in English.
