Scribner’s selection gathers Victorian stories set in or touching Italy. James Payn’s faithful retainer serves a country family of dubious greatness, W. E. Norris tells of Bianca, A. Mary F. Robinson’s Goneril grows up among old ladies and a doting signora, and Laurence Oliphant tells of a brigand’s bride in the south, and Trollope closes with Mrs. General Talboys.
