A girl sent to Edinburgh for medical treatment joins the evening circle round the sofa of the surgeon’s invalid sister, where each guest tells a tale. The longest is My Lady Ludlow, about a proud old aristocrat who distrusts education for the poor; others include The Doom of the Griffiths, The Poor Clare and The Half-Brothers.
