An old night-watchman on the wharf tells how sailormen like Ginger Dick and Peter Russet try and fail to save their pay, and how schemes, superstitions and courtships go wrong in Claybury and the riverside streets. There are fourteen stories in all, including ‘The Money-Box’, ‘The Persecution of Bob Pretty’ and ‘Admiral Peters’.
Comic stories in Jacobs’s best manner, with Cockney voices and tightly plotted reversals that still raise a laugh. Download the free EPUB.
