Doctor Marigold, a Cheap Jack who sells from a cart on the open road, tells his own life story in his salesman’s patter: his rough marriage, the loss of his little daughter, and the deaf and mute girl he buys from a fairground showman for a pair of braces, whom he names Sophy and lovingly teaches to read.
