Hardy’s last collection gathers a dozen stories previously scattered through magazines. In the title tale a dashing hussar officer gives up the army for holy orders to his wife’s dismay; others include “The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid”, “Enter a Dragoon”, with its preserved wedding cake, and “The Grave by the Handpost”, all set among the towns and heaths of Wessex.
Minor Hardy by his own modest account, but full of his irony and feeling for country life. Download the free EPUB.
