Goldsmith remembers Sweet Auburn, the loveliest village of the plain, with its mill, church, alehouse, preacher and village schoolmaster, and mourns its destruction as a rich man’s park replaces the cottages and its people are driven to the cities or across the sea. This edition carries illustrations by members of the Etching Club.
One of the best-loved poems of the eighteenth century and a lasting protest against rural depopulation. Download the free EPUB.
