The title poem is a monodrama spoken by a brooding young man whose father died in a ruined speculation, and who falls in love with Maud, daughter of the family he blames. Around it Tennyson set The Brook, the ode on the death of the Duke of Wellington, lines to F. D. Maurice, The Daisy, Will and The Charge of the Light Brigade.
Tennyson’s own favourite among his poems, alongside his most famous ballad of war. Download the free EPUB.
