Written largely in Italy, Sicily and New Mexico, Lawrence’s 1923 collection addresses fruits, trees, flowers and creatures in loose, argumentative free verse. Pomegranates, figs and medlars give way to Tuscan cypresses and almond blossom, then to tortoises, bats, a mountain lion and the celebrated Snake, in which he regrets throwing a log at a visitor at his water trough.
Often called Lawrence’s finest book of poems, vivid and sensuous. Download the free EPUB.
