Lang called this a rally of fugitive rhymes, and it ranges widely. A Scot salutes Jeanne d’Arc in the name of the Auld Alliance, the Jacobite garrison holds the Bass Rock for King James, Prince Charles appears in three portraits, Omar Khayyam and Aesop are paraphrased, and a wall poster urging readers to use Sunlight Soap inspires a comic hymn to modern uplift.
