Geoffrey Bache Smith wrote these poems at Oxford, in Wales and in France, where he served from late 1915 until his death from wounds in December 1916. The book moves from Arthurian legend at Glastonbury and youthful verses on books and pictures to poems of the war, ending with The Burial of Sophocles, whose final version was sent home from the trenches.
Edited after his death by his close friend J. R. R. Tolkien, a moving record of a lost generation’s promise. Download the free EPUB.
