The title poem, in blank verse, follows a young Scottish farmer who chooses to stay with the plough and whose inner life is shaped by a single meeting with a lady above his station. Other poems include ‘The Homeless Ghost’, ‘Abu Midjan’, ‘A Book of Dreams’ and a sonnet to Aurelio Saffi, opening with a dedication to the poet’s father.
