Sir Frederick Treves, surgeon at the London Hospital, recalls finding the Elephant Man exhibited in a shop on the Mile End Road and giving him a home inside the hospital. The other chapters draw on decades of practice: the old receiving room, dying depositions taken at the bedside, a cure for nerves, breaking bad news and patients he never forgot.
The primary source behind the Elephant Man story, written with a doctor’s candour shortly before Treves’s death in 1923. Download the free EPUB.
