Born free in Philadelphia, Mifflin Wistar Gibbs worked as a carpenter, lectured against slavery with Frederick Douglass, sought his fortune in Gold Rush California and British Columbia, and became an attorney, a municipal judge in Little Rock, a federal land officer and consul to Madagascar. His memoir mixes his own story with reflections on Black life after emancipation.
A remarkable African American autobiography of 1902, introduced by Booker T. Washington. Download the free EPUB.
