Drawn from a diary kept every day of his adult life, Alexander Newton’s autobiography follows him from his early years as a free Black man in the slave South, through service with the Twenty-ninth Connecticut Volunteers, a Black regiment of the Civil War, to decades as an A. M. E. minister building and rebuilding churches. It closes with his views on the church and on the ‘Negro problem’.
A rare first-hand record by a Black Union soldier and churchman, essential for readers of the Civil War and its aftermath. Download the free EPUB.
