Beginning with the bookcase in his boyhood home in Ohio, Howells recalls each author who seized him in turn: Goldsmith, Cervantes, Irving, Shakespeare, Heine, Dickens, Thackeray, George Eliot, Tolstoy and many more. It is a reading autobiography, frank about youthful enthusiasms and snobberies.
A delightful book for anyone whose life has been shaped by reading, from the dean of American letters. Download the free EPUB.
