Carlyle wrote this life of his friend John Sterling, who died of consumption in 1844, partly to correct Archdeacon Hare’s memoir, which had dwelt on Sterling’s religious doubts. He follows Sterling through Glasgow and Cambridge, the Athenaeum, Coleridge’s talk, the doomed Spanish exile Torrijos and a stay on the West Indian island of St. Vincent.
