Born on a slave ship, Ignatius Sancho became a butler, then a grocer in Westminster, a composer and a man of letters who corresponded with Laurence Sterne. His letters to friends and patrons are playful, affectionate and pointed by turns, condemning the cruelty of the slave trade. Joseph Jekyll’s memoir of his life is prefixed.
