Jacques Jasmin was born poor in Agen in 1798, kept a barber’s and hairdresser’s shop with his wife Mariette, and became one of the most celebrated poets of southern France writing in the Gascon tongue. Samuel Smiles follows his boyhood, his shop and his poetry, and the long tours on which he recited his verse to raise money for churches, schools and the poor.
