Isaac Hopper, a Philadelphia Quaker, spent his life helping others, and so his biography is largely made of their stories. Lydia Maria Child recounts how he sheltered fugitive slaves, fought kidnappers in the courts, rescued kidnapped free Black children, and later worked for prisoners in New York, all with unshakeable calm and humour.
