The naturalist J. Arthur Thomson gives a short account of Herbert Spencer’s life, from his heredity and upbringing through his years as a railway engineer to the long labour of the Synthetic Philosophy. He then appraises Spencer’s character and his contributions to biology and to evolutionary thought, leaving his sociology and ethics largely aside.
A balanced introduction to a thinker who once dominated Victorian ideas and is now little read. Download the free EPUB.
