Spence sat down at eighty-four to tell a life that ran alongside the growth of South Australia, where her family arrived in 1839 when the colony was not yet three years old. She recalls her Scottish childhood, starting as a governess at seventeen, lovers and friends, her novels and journalism, her preaching, and her long campaigns for girls’ education and proportional representation.
