The Dean of St Paul’s writes the life of Francis Bacon for the English Men of Letters series. He follows his early life, his ambitions under Elizabeth, his rise under James I to Solicitor-General, Attorney-General and Chancellor, his rivalry with Coke, his fall for bribery and his later years, then assesses his philosophy and writings.
