Joseph Wright of Derby, once among the best-known English painters, had sunk into semi-oblivion by the 1880s when the Derby exhibition of 1883 began to restore his fame. William Bemrose, a Derby man and connection of the artist’s family, assembles his life, letters and pictures: the portraits, the landscapes and Italian scenes, and the candlelit subjects for which he is remembered.
