Written as a Clark University doctoral dissertation, this study collects and discusses the words of dozens of religious songs sung in Black communities of the American South, from “God’s goin’ to wake up the dead” to songs on sinners and the cross. Its racial attitudes are those of a white Southern scholar of 1909.
A historically important record of spiritual texts by the man who later built sociology at the University of North Carolina. Download the free EPUB.
