Written for young people and translated by George P. Upton, this short life follows Bach from an orphaned boyhood through his early posts to fame. Episodes include the famous challenge at Dresden, when the boastful French organist Marchand fled rather than compete, and Bach’s long, hard-working years at Leipzig.
