The full libretto by Adelheid Wette, the composer’s sister, for the opera first staged at Weimar in 1893, in a 1905 edition printed for the Metropolitan Opera with German and English texts. The broom-maker’s children are sent into the forest, sleep under the guard of fourteen angels, and find the witch’s gingerbread house in the third act.
