Williams learned Narragansett while founding Rhode Island, and arranged this by subject — salutation, eating, sleep, trade, war, death — giving the words and phrases, then his own observations on Narragansett life, and a verse at each chapter’s end comparing the natives’ conduct favourably with the English.
