Durland lived with revolutionaries, visited prisons and pogrom-wrecked towns, attended the first Duma and watched it dissolved, and travelled to the Siberian exile settlements. Written while the events were unfolding, it is one of the fullest eyewitness accounts of Russia between the two revolutions.
