In 1836 Parliament debated bills to enforce strict Sunday observance, and the young Dickens answered with this pamphlet, dedicated with heavy irony to the Bishop of London. He describes Sunday as it is for London’s working people, Sunday as the Sabbath bills would make it, with fines for every call of ‘Waiter’, and Sunday as it might be, with open museums and village games.
Early, angry, funny Dickens, already defending the pleasures of the poor. Download the free EPUB.
