Five chapters from The Sketch Book follow an American traveller who rides a crowded stagecoach into the English countryside and spends the holiday with Squire Bracebridge. There are yule logs, carols, a Christmas Day service, a boar’s head at dinner and the squire’s grumbling over modern tea-and-toast breakfasts, all set among Randolph Caldecott’s drawings woven through the text.
The sketches that helped revive the old English Christmas, in Caldecott’s charming illustrated edition. Download the free EPUB.
