Between 1885 and 1895 the young Tagore travelled the rivers of rural Bengal by houseboat, overseeing his family’s estates at Shelidah, Shazadpur and Kaligram. His letters from those years describe monsoon skies, village people, ferry crossings and long idle hours on the water, written in English translation with an introduction in which the poet looks back on his youth.
An intimate, lyrical portrait of Bengal by the Nobel laureate, for readers of letters, travel and Indian literature. Download the free EPUB.
