Written around the Great War, when Italy was completing the unification Dante had imagined, these essays by Lonsdale Ragg read Dante as a prophet of love and of political liberty. Other chapters treat Dante’s wit and humour, his place in medieval thought, his ideas on education, the Purgatorio, and Dante and Islam as seen through the Gospel of Barnabas.
