In 1851 the Oatman family, travelling alone toward California, was attacked near the Gila River; most were killed, their son Lorenzo was left for dead, and Olive and Mary Ann were carried off. Drawing on interviews with the survivors, R. B. Stratton tells of their captivity, Mary Ann’s death in famine among the Mohave, and Olive’s eventual return.
A famous frontier captivity narrative, whose hostile portrayal of Native peoples is very much that of the 1850s. Download the free EPUB.
