A young man rambling on foot comes to a crossroads and finds a house on wheels, the travelling show of an old man with a mechanical puppet world. Soon the wagon fills with fellow wanderers: a pedlar of books, a pretty fortune-teller, a ragged old beggar and others, all bound for a camp meeting, and the narrator decides to join them.
