In 1916 the humour magazine Life ran a contest for the best very short story, and this volume gathers the eighty-one winners with an introduction by its managing editor. Ralph Henry Barbour and George Randolph Osborne took first prize; other entries range over war, business ethics, aviation and courtship, each told in a few pages. Some dialect pieces reflect the racial attitudes of the period.
