Our Square lies broad and green in the forgotten depths of New York, ringed by slums and full of children, bickering neighbours, street-corner spellbinders and courting couples. The narrator, a regular of its benches, tells stories of its people: a chair that whispers, Maclachan, a peacemaker, an Orpheus, white magic and the meanest man in the square.
