Harte claims to have ransacked the Spanish archives of Upper California for these stories, and admits the cautious reader will doubt them. A mission padre meets the devil on Monte del Diablo, Padre Vincentio has a strange adventure, a broker strikes a bargain with Satan, and San Francisco is imagined in ruins, before a closing night at a Sierra stage stop called Wingdam.
Early, playful Harte for readers who know the mining-camp stories and want his lighter side. Download the free EPUB.
